Frequently Asked Questions About Donating to The Intercept

DO I NEED TO PAY A SUBSCRIPTION FEE TO READ THE INTERCEPT?

No. We don’t have a paywall so that everyone can have access to our work, no matter what their financial situation. We do ask that frequent readers subscribe to our free newsletter — and if you can afford to donate, you can help keep The Intercept available to all by becoming a member.

If you have already subscribed to our newsletter or donated to The Intercept and continue to see the email subscription prompt on the site, please click the button marked “Already Subscribed?” at the bottom of the prompt.

WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT THE INTERCEPT?

As a nonprofit organization, The Intercept relies on donations from our readers and listeners as a key funding source for our journalism. As a member, you help us hold the powerful to account, give voice to the voiceless, and tell stories you won’t find anywhere else. The Intercept’s membership program ensures that we will remain strong and independent and demonstrates public support for the kind of fierce, adversarial journalism we do every day.

HOW CAN I DONATE TO THE INTERCEPT?

WHO SHOULD I CONTACT IF I WANT TO MAKE A MAJOR GIFT?

We’d love to speak with you about major gift options. Major gifts and philanthropic support are key to The Intercept’s future and have already helped us pave the way for a successful transition to independence. For more information please contact Kate Miller, Senior Director of Development, at kate.miller@theintercept.com.

WHAT IS FIRST LOOK INSTITUTE, AND HOW IS IT RELATED TO THE INTERCEPT?

First Look Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports fearless investigative journalism, innovative and cinematic nonfiction filmmaking, and provides essential legal support to protect the right to a free and open society and press. First Look Institute has been the home of The Intercept since its founding in 2014 with generous financial support from Pierre Omidyar.

Now, backed by a four-year financial commitment from First Look Institute, The Intercept will become an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2023. In the interim, First Look Institute is acting as The Intercept’s fiscal sponsor while we await confirmation of our 501(c)(3) status as a new organization.

DOES A SMALL DONATION MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE?

Absolutely! A donation of any amount is welcome. By making a contribution, you send a powerful message and demonstrate the public demand for fearless, adversarial journalism. Your donation helps us spread the word that our readers and listeners are passionate about supporting the reporting that matters to them.

IS MY DONATION TO THE INTERCEPT TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes (in the United States). During our transition to becoming an independent 501(c)(3), First Look Institute is the fiscal sponsor of The Intercept. First Look Institute is a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization (tax ID number 80-0951255) with a mission to create a world with greater understanding, engaged citizens, and responsive institutions.

Donations to The Intercept will continue to be tax deductible in the United States during and after our transition to an independent nonprofit organization.

We do not sell or trade your information to anyone, in any form, and go to great lengths to ensure that your information is stored in a manner that comports with information security best practices. Anyone who handles your data is held to rigorous privacy standards. Please refer to our privacy policy and donor privacy practices.

HOW DOES THE INTERCEPT USE MY DONATION? HOW CAN I SEE YOUR FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES?

Your entire contribution to The Intercept goes to support projects and journalism for The Intercept. You can find our 990s at the bottom of the “About” page on First Look Institute’s website.

IS MY DONATION DISCLOSED TO ANYONE?

GIFT POLICY

Updated July 11, 2023

The Intercept is a nonprofit newsroom that relies on public support to sustain our work. We accept funding from individuals, foundations, partnerships, corporations, and other organizations. Our mission depends on our independence. Editorial decisions are never based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source and we do not accept donations with any conditions that create an actual or apparent conflict of interest with our work or otherwise compromise our independence.
We accept contributions for general support, coverage of broad topic areas, and specific projects. All news judgments are made independently. We do not permit supporters to assign, review, or edit any of our content, nor do we share any pre-publication material with supporters.

In the interest of transparency, we publicly disclose all supporters who have given a total of $5,000 or more and their cumulative annual giving by publishing our IRS 990 form Schedule B on our website. In cases where we are reporting on a person or entity who has contributed more than $5,000, we disclose the relationship in the story. We accept anonymous donations only in cases that adhere to this policy.

We do not accept support from government entities, political campaigns, political action committees, or political organizations as defined in Section 527 of the IRS Code.
